How instrumental therapies work, when they are indicated and what to expect from the sessions.

What are Radial Shockwaves and which conditions are they indicated for?

They are mechanical acoustic pulses delivered through the skin to the painful area. This non-invasive technique stimulates local microcirculation, reduces chronic inflammation and supports tissue regeneration. It is indicated for musculoskeletal and tendon conditions that have not responded to other therapies: plantar fasciitis, calcific tendinopathies of the shoulder, tennis and golfer’s elbow, and chronic Achilles and patellar tendinopathies.

Is shockwave treatment painful? How many sessions are needed?

The treatment can cause temporary, generally tolerable local discomfort, which varies according to the patient's sensitivity and the degree of inflammation in the area. The physiotherapist adjusts the energy intensity during the session. A standard cycle includes 3 to 5 weekly sessions; a reduction in pain is often noticed after the first few applications.

Are there contraindications for shockwave therapy?

Yes. Shockwaves are not performed near the growth plates of children and adolescents, on tumour tissue, in the presence of acute infections in the area to be treated, on patients with pacemakers, during pregnancy, or in people with severe clotting disorders or on high-dose oral anticoagulant therapy. The patient's medical history is always assessed before starting the cycle.

When is Tecar therapy preferable to shockwave therapy?

Tecar therapy works through energy transfer, reducing inflammation and deep pain with endogenous heat: it is indicated for acute muscle injuries, contractures and joint inflammation. Shockwaves are mechanical pressure pulses indicated for chronic degenerative conditions and fibrotic or calcified tissue — such as shoulder calcifications, Achilles tendinopathy and plantar fasciitis — because they stimulate new blood vessel formation and tissue reabsorption.

Physiotherapy makes it possible to work with personalized treatment plans that may rely on manual techniques as well as specific devices: in the latter case we speak of instrumental physical therapies, which use electromagnetic, mechanical or thermal energy for therapeutic purposes. Instrumental therapies differ according to the type of energy produced by the equipment; each is designed to provide a pain-free treatment without side effects.

Electrotherapy and ultrasound therapy

Electrical energy and sound waves are used in physiotherapy to reduce pain and inflammation and to support healing. The techniques available at MediSport Center include:

Iontophoresis: delivers medication through the skin using electric current.
TENS: electrical impulses to relieve pain.
Electrostimulation: strengthens muscles and stimulates the nerves.
Magnetotherapy: electromagnetic waves to support tissue regeneration.
EPI®: a medical treatment (by prescription) for chronic pain, inflammation and muscle injuries.

Tecar therapy: what it is and the benefits of the treatment

Joint, bone and muscle conditions can be treated with thermal energy through Tecar therapy. The plates of this device produce different intensities of heat, which stimulate microcirculation and vasodilation: conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and back pain can be treated without pain for the patient.
