Sleep disorders

Sleeping badly? The signs not to overlook

Sleeping too little or poorly affects concentration, memory and mood, and increases cardiovascular risk. Chronic tiredness, sleepiness, snoring or insomnia may indicate undiagnosed sleep disorders, including:

  • Sleep apnea: brief pauses in breathing, often linked to obesity or high blood pressure.
  • Snoring: may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS).
  • Insomnia: difficulty falling asleep or non-restorative sleep, caused by psychological factors or poor sleep habits.
  • Hypersomnia: excessive sleepiness, even after normal sleep.
  • Narcolepsy: a neurological disorder that alters the sleep-wake rhythm.
  • Nocturnal epilepsy: epileptic seizures during sleep, especially in children.
  • Parasomnias: sleepwalking, bruxism, restless legs, sleep paralysis.
Night-time snoring and daytime sleepiness: when should I be concerned?

Chronic snoring often hides Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS), a condition in which breathing stops repeatedly during the night, reducing the oxygen level in the blood. Besides daytime fatigue, it increases the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke: these symptoms should not be overlooked and deserve a specialist assessment.

Which examinations are needed to diagnose sleep apnea?

A correct diagnosis requires a pulmonology visit combined with polysomnography (overnight cardiorespiratory monitoring), a non-invasive examination that records respiratory and cardiac parameters during sleep and can also be performed comfortably at the patient’s home.

How is obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) treated?

Once the disorder has been diagnosed through the pulmonology visit and the sleep study, OSAS can be treated effectively, for example with CPAP ventilation therapy or mandibular advancement dental devices, according to the specialist’s indications.

When is it useful to start a care pathway for sleep disorders?

If you struggle to fall asleep or wake up frequently during the night
If you snore habitually or have episodes of sleep apnea
If you suffer from excessive daytime sleepiness or difficulty concentrating
If you feel tired on waking even after hours of sleep
If you experience irritability, memory lapses or mood swings

Diagnosis with polysomnography

Polysomnography is the reference examination for the diagnosis of sleep apnea and sleep disorders. At MediSport Center we use advanced equipment to monitor brain activity, breathing and heart rate during sleep. We also perform home cardiorespiratory polysomnography, a non-invasive examination that allows the quality of your rest to be assessed comfortably at home.
