An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor specialised in the diagnosis, care and pharmacological or surgical treatment of eye diseases (such as glaucoma, cataract and maculopathies). An optometrist is a university-trained professional who deals exclusively with visual wellbeing from a functional and refractive point of view. They do not diagnose diseases or prescribe medication, but carry out refractive analysis, measure eyesight, quantify visual defects (myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, presbyopia) and design personalised corrective solutions, such as glasses and custom-made contact lenses. Custom and advanced contact lens fitting consists of designing and applying contact lenses geometrically calibrated to the specific morphology of the patient’s eye. It is essential when standard commercial contact lenses (daily or monthly) prove intolerable, unstable or fail to provide sharp vision. It is used in cases of high astigmatism, asymmetric corneas, after refractive surgery or for the simultaneous correction of presbyopia (multifocal lenses), always starting from a digital mapping of the eye and an analysis of the tear film.

Asthenopia, or digital eye strain, is a form of visual fatigue caused by prolonged screen use (computer, smartphone, tablet). The most common symptoms include burning and dry eyes, temporarily blurred or double vision, light sensitivity and tension-type headaches (frontal headache). Through an optometric visual analysis, it is possible to assess the efficiency of binocular vision and focusing, prescribing anti-fatigue lenses with specific blue-light filters if necessary.

Sport Vision is a visual assessment and training protocol designed to optimise the dynamic visual skills of athletes, improving competitive performance and reaction times on the field. It does not stop at checking standard visual acuity, but trains the visuo-motor system to process information under physical effort. It is aimed at amateur athletes and elite professionals, particularly those who practise team and movement sports (football, basketball, tennis, padel) or high-precision disciplines (shooting).

A personalised Sport Vision programme works on parameters that are crucial for athletic performance: hand–eye and foot–eye coordination, to speed up the body’s motor response to a visual stimulus; peripheral vision, to perceive teammates, opponents or objects at the edges of the field without moving the head; dynamic fixation and eye tracking, to keep a fast-moving ball or target perfectly in focus; stereopsis, to optimise depth perception and better judge distances, trajectories and speed.

The programme begins with a preliminary sports visual analysis carried out by our optometrists to identify the athlete’s strengths and weaknesses. Visual training sessions are then structured using interactive light panels, computerised instruments and dynamic coordination exercises, capable of reducing reaction times and improving the effectiveness of technical movements on the field.
