Adults and newborns:
when to see an osteopath
Osteopathic techniques, the conditions they address and how many sessions are usually needed.
Which newborn disorders is neonatal osteopathy indicated for?
Neonatal osteopathy assesses and treats tissue, fascial or cranial tensions that may arise in the newborn due to the position in the womb or the stress of birth (long labours, caesarean or breech deliveries, vacuum extraction). It is particularly indicated for positional plagiocephaly, infant colic and gastroesophageal reflux, difficulties latching on during breastfeeding, irritability and sleep disturbances.
Is osteopathic treatment safe for newborns? Does it hurt the baby?
The treatment is non-invasive and painless. The osteopath never performs abrupt structural manipulations on newborns or children: the techniques are exclusively palpatory, fascial and cranial, with very light finger pressure. Most newborns experience the session as a moment of relaxation, and often fall asleep during or shortly after the treatment.
What is the difference between Structural and Visceral Osteopathy?
Osteopathy considers the body as a single functional unit, but techniques differ by target area. Structural osteopathy focuses on the musculoskeletal system: through joint mobilisations and manipulations it aims to restore the mobility of vertebrae and joints (low back pain, neck pain, sciatica, postural pain). Visceral osteopathy focuses on the mobility of the internal organs and their connections with the spine: restrictions at this level can be reflected in the back or be associated with functional disorders such as reflux, constipation and digestive difficulties.
What does Craniosacral Therapy performed by the osteopath involve?
It is a manual technique based on listening to and regulating the rhythm of fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid, which flows from the skull to the sacrum. Through very light contact on the bones of the skull and the spine, the osteopath works on the tensions of the deep membranes. It is used for tension headaches, chronic migraines, vertigo, tinnitus, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders and states of anxiety or insomnia.
How many osteopathy sessions are needed to feel the first benefits?
The number of sessions depends on the nature of the problem, acute or chronic, and on the patient's individual response. For an acute problem, such as sudden low back pain or recent neck pain, 2-3 sessions may be enough. Chronic or long-standing postural disorders may require a longer course, followed by periodic maintenance sessions — for example one every two or three months — to prevent relapses.
