Do you have these symptoms? When a vascular assessment is needed
Swollen or heavy legs, varicose veins, calf pain that appears when walking or visible capillaries can be signals worth checking. A vascular assessment makes it possible to detect and treat conditions such as:
- Atherosclerosis: narrowing of the arteries caused by plaque build-up.
- High blood pressure (hypertension): a risk factor for stroke and heart disease.
- Aneurysms: abnormal dilations of blood vessels with a risk of rupture.
- Thrombosis: blood clots that can obstruct blood flow.
- Peripheral arterial disease: reduced blood circulation to the extremities.
- Varicose veins: dilated, visible and often painful veins.
What is a Doppler ultrasound of the supra-aortic trunks (carotid arteries) for?
It is a vascular ultrasound scan focused on the carotid and vertebral arteries, the vessels that carry blood to the brain. The examination analyses the morphology of the arterial walls and the velocity of the blood flow, allowing the early detection of atherosclerotic plaques (hardening or narrowing of the vessels).
When should a carotid Doppler ultrasound (supra-aortic trunks) be performed?
It is a non-invasive examination recommended as a preventive screening for people over 50 or with cardiovascular risk factors (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, family history). It assesses the health of the carotid arteries, promptly detecting atherosclerotic plaques or stenosis that could cause a stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA).
What are the symptoms of venous insufficiency in the lower limbs?
The main symptoms that call for a vascular surgery visit with a venous Doppler ultrasound of the legs are: a feeling of heaviness and ankle swelling (especially in the evening), the appearance of varicose veins or visible capillaries (telangiectasias), night-time calf cramps and localised pain that appears when walking.
What are the warning signs that call for a vascular surgery visit for the lower limbs?
Persistent ankle swelling, a feeling of heaviness, calf pain that appears when walking and forces you to stop (intermittent claudication), visible varicose veins, fragile capillaries (telangiectasias) or night-time tingling. The reference diagnostic examination is the venous and arterial Doppler ultrasound of the lower limbs.
