REMS bone densitometry, clinical ultrasound and exam preparation: the answers before your appointment.

What is the REMS bone densitometry (MOC REMS) and how does it work?

REMS bone densitometry (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi-Spectrometry) is a technology for the early diagnosis of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Unlike traditional DEXA densitometry, which uses X-rays, it uses ultrasound to analyse bone structure at the most clinically relevant anatomical sites: the lumbar spine and the femoral neck. The examination provides a profile of bone mineral density without exposing the patient to ionising radiation.

What are the advantages of REMS densitometry over traditional DEXA?

As it emits no X-rays, the examination can be repeated at short intervals and carried out on pregnant women, growing children and frail patients. It also analyses the micro-architectural quality of the bone and provides the Fragility Score, a parameter that estimates the risk of a fragility fracture over the following five years. The instrument automatically discards artefacts, such as calcifications or spinal osteoarthritis, that can alter the results.

Who should have a REMS densitometry examination?

Screening is recommended in particular for women in menopause or pre-menopause, adults over 50-60, those with a family history of osteoporosis or previous fractures from minor trauma, patients on prolonged treatment with corticosteroids or hormone therapy, and female athletes with the so-called female athlete triad (amenorrhoea, low energy availability and early bone fragility).

Color Doppler ultrasound

Assesses blood flow and detects possible obstructions in the vessels.

Abdominal arterial/venous color Doppler ultrasound

Used to check the condition of the abdominal blood vessels and blood flow, and to monitor previously diagnosed conditions.

Carotid and upper/lower limb arterial/venous color Doppler ultrasound

Assesses arterial and venous blood flow, vessel diameter and the possible presence of plaques that hinder the supply of oxygenated blood to the brain.

Breast color Doppler ultrasound

Examines breast tissue and investigates the possible presence of benign nodules, cysts, tumours or inflammation.

Echocardiography

Used to assess how the heart functions at rest and under stress.

Ultrasound examinations

Ultrasound examinations are non-invasive diagnostic tests that use ultrasound waves to examine internal organs and tissues with precision. These are the types of ultrasound available at MediSport Center:

Pelvic ultrasound

An examination focused on assessing the organs of the pelvic area: In men — examines the prostate and bladder. In women — allows assessment of the uterus, ovaries and bladder. Useful for diagnosing inflammation, cysts, fibroids or other gynaecological and urological conditions.

Kidney and urinary tract ultrasound

A non-invasive examination used to assess: The size and morphology of the kidneys and urinary tract. Possible abnormalities such as kidney stones or urinary infections. Prostate health in men.

Breast ultrasound

A key examination for monitoring breast health. Indicated for: Prevention and early detection of nodules or cysts. Monitoring possible changes after a mammogram. Assessment of the axillary lymph nodes.

Musculoskeletal and tendon ultrasound

Assessment of muscles, tendons and joints to identify: Inflammation such as tendinitis and bursitis. Muscle injuries, strains or tears. Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Thyroid and parathyroid ultrasound

An examination for the diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid and parathyroid conditions, useful for: Detecting thyroid nodules or cysts. Monitoring changes in thyroid function. Assessing possible inflammation of the gland.

Liver and biliary tract ultrasound

Examines the liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, making it possible to: Detect gallstones and liver conditions. Monitor inflammation and chronic liver conditions.

Bowel loop ultrasound

A non-invasive examination used to assess: Chronic inflammation such as Crohn's disease. Appendicitis and ulcerative colitis. Diverticulosis and other intestinal conditions.

Upper/lower/complete abdominal ultrasound

A comprehensive examination of the abdominal organs, including: Liver, pancreas and spleen. Kidneys and bladder. Intestine and stomach. Indicated for abdominal pain, digestive disorders and liver conditions.

Transrectal prostate ultrasound

A specialist examination of the prostate, useful for: Early detection of prostatic hypertrophy or tumours. Monitoring any abnormalities found.

Skin ultrasound

Allows examination of the soft tissues to identify: Subcutaneous cysts, lipomas or other formations. Inflammation or skin changes. Possible enlarged lymph nodes.

Pancreatic ultrasound

An examination focused on the pancreas and surrounding structures, useful for: Diagnosing stones, cysts or tumours. Monitoring inflammation or vascular abnormalities.

Obstetric and gynaecological ultrasounds

Gynaecological and obstetric ultrasounds make it possible to monitor the health of the female reproductive system and the course of pregnancy.

Transvaginal ultrasound

A detailed examination to assess the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Indicated for: Monitoring fertility and ovulation. Diagnosing fibroids, ovarian cysts or endometriosis. Checking the condition of the uterus in early pregnancy.

3D and 4D obstetric ultrasound

Advanced technology for assessing the foetus: 3D — detailed images of foetal morphology. 4D — real-time visualisation of the baby's movements.

Morphology (anatomy) ultrasound

A key examination in the second trimester of pregnancy to: Assess the foetus's growth and health. Check the position of the placenta and umbilical cord. Monitor possible structural abnormalities.
